Mattel's revival of the vintage Masters of the Universe line in 2008 was met with enormous success. The Masters of the Universe Classics line quickly became one of the biggest, feverishly collected, and most heavily discussed lines in the action figure industry. He-Man and the accompanying characters had struck a chord with collectors more than 25 years after their initial release.
The line's success has continued for a number of years, and the figures have remained consistently well-made and enjoyable. The following 10 figures are the best of the best in the first five years (2008-2012) of the Masters of the Universe Classics line.
Teela is the most prominent female character in the original Masters of the Universe cartoon, and her Classics figure does her legacy justice. It includes a variety of fantastic accessories and costume changes. Her head sculpt is beautiful, and the articulation is functional enough to make her great for play or posing.
Although Demo-Man may not be a well-known in the He-Man mythos, the Classics figures is a fantastic release. The colors are eye-catching, the sculpt is immensely detailed, and the accessories are wonderful in every regard. Few figures stand out on a shelf like Demo-Man.
8. Moss Man
The original Masters of the Universe line was beloved for its variety of interesting action features, but for the most part, the Classics line abandoned that paradigm. Moss Man returned the Classics line to its roots (forgive me for the pun), by reintroducing the classic action feature. Moss Man smells like moss, and feels like it too! The figure is tons of fun to show off friends, and looks fantastic in a display as well.
The villains in the He-Man universe are sometimes too over the top, goofy, and ridiculous to take seriously. Hordak is none of the above, and it's welcome. The Classics figure is an intimidating, attractive, and fun release that exceeds the vintage figure in every way.
6. Trap Jaw
Trap Jaw is a classic He-Man villains, and the Classics line makes the character even better. The typically goofy visage of Trap Jaw was made horrifying by the gory face underneath the mechanical jaw, giving the Classics Trap Jaw an unmatched edge and appeal. The figure is also beautifully sculpted and one of the better-designed figures in the line.
Man-At-Arms stands out in the Classics line because of his accessories. Not only does he include a second head, he comes with a variety of weapons and a set of body armor that allows the collector a lot of options. Man-At-Arms is a vital He-Man ally, and this figure is a vital piece of any Classics collection.
Mer-Man primarily ranks highly due to the fantastic sculpting the figure features. His accessories are perfect, his articulation is perfect, and his extra head is perfect. But it's the extremely detailed sculpting that really takes Mer-Man over the top of other figures. Figures don't get much more enjoyable or look better than this one.
The Classics line couldn't exist without its hero He-Man, and though the original Classics figure has a few flaws, it's still one of the most important and best-executed figures in the line. It's He-Man after all, and this figure single-handedly altered the course of Mattel's collector lines, as well as the life of the Masters of the Universe brand. Any one who claims to be a fan absolutely has to own this figure.
As important as He-Man is to the life of the Masters of the Universe brand, Skeletor is right behind him. But the Classics Skeletor figure has one advantage, it's a better action figure. Skeletor is perfectly executed, making it the ideal and iconic representation of the character everyone has always wanted. It doesn't get much better than Classics Skeletor.
1. Battle Cat
And then there's Battle Cat. Every kid from the '80s wanted a Battle Cat figure, and little did they know this was the figure they actually wanted. The Classics Battle Cat takes the idea of Battle Cat that every kid had, and perfects it. Little did they know, the Battle Cat they always wanted was going to be nearly 30 years late. The figure is superbly articulated, absurdly well-designed, and almost obnoxious in how perfect it is. Battle Cat is the absolute epitome of Masters of the Universe action figures, and the best Classics figure in the line's first five years.
