Mattel is already well into the Masters of the Universe Classics line, so it's welcoming to see them changing some major aspects of the line. Gladly the figures are remaining in the same format, but a new art style is being issued in 2012 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the brand. Mattel claims "this 'alt' style to the Classic brand was created as a visual way to re-imagine the vast characters and worlds of Masters of the Universe with a contemporary edge."
They brought in prolific artist Alvin Lee to launch these redesigns, and I personally like the look of them. Check out the designs for yourself, and I think you'll agree. Lee took the basic costume elements and character designs, but placed them into more realistic proportions and an interestingly muted color palette. It's also good to see artwork for Ram-Man despite not receiving a figure based on him yet.
Most interesting of all may be this comment by Mattel, "look for the new art to appear on toy packaging starting in Q1, and on licensed goods from shirts to lunchboxes throughout 2012," suggesting that Mattel will be branching out into other media with Masters of the Universe. That is something we haven't seen in a while, and is definitely a welcome change to this collector.
