I've just had one of those kinds of weeks that collectors occasionally have when the collecting bug bites hard and the scores are a-plenty. Specifically, I've been really cleaning up on the blind bagged Lego Minifigs in the past couple of weeks. It helps that I've been doing a ton of traveling lately (Vancouver, B.C., San Diego, Los Angeles), because they are nowhere to be found in my hometown of Seattle, and I just seemed to be constantly finding series 3 and 4 for sale, and scooping up a few every time they were presented to me. So, in short, I'm in a minifig state of mind.
Which brings me to my main point; Two years ago, when I first took over this website, I posed the question as to whether or not Lego minifigs (short for "mini-figures", for those out of the loop) could be considered action figures. The consensus was split pretty much down the middle, with some readers saying no, other saying yes, and the rest not really caring one way or the other. Of course, I had abut 4 readers back then, so this may not have been the most in-depth pole.
Now that I easily have 7 readers, maybe even 8, I've decided to readdress the subject, and brazenly declare that, as far as About.com Action Figures is concerned; Lego minifigs are indeed action figures!
Now, please allow me to list a few reasons as to why I'm making this bold and courageous declaration:
- The have a minimum of 7 points of articulation. (That's two more than the original Star Wars figures.)
- The often come with accessories, like weapons, potion bottles, snowboards, etc.
- The are now sold individually. (No longer being just an accessory to a building block set.)
- And the very nature of their playability and collectability practically mirrors the innate playability and collectability of action figures.
So, there. I say that Lego minifigs are action figures. And what does that mean to you? Probably nothing. It won't change your life one bit. But what it will do, is add a whole new line of collectibles that can fall under our little umbrella here at About.com Action Figures. So, basically, you can expect all kinds of news, reviews, galleries, articles, links and whatnot all about Lego minifigs from here on out.
So shall it be written, so shall it be done. Now I've got to go and see f I can find the series 3 gorilla costume minifig.
